Data Execution Prevention closes Internet Explorer 8

Has anyone ran into this problem? Periodically, I get the following message since I installed Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2.

Internet Explorer was closed
To help protect your computer, Data Execution Prevention has closed Internet Explorer. Click to learn more.

The funny thing is, nothing seems to close. IE remains running. Does anyone know what causes this? Is it an addon, like Google Toolbar? Or just a bug?

Update: I’m pretty suspicious its a Google Toolbar problem. Several times this error has occured when I open a new tab. The tab will still open, but Google Toolbar will not appear on the new tab.

i get this too on a vista sp 1 install, but i don’t have anything other than a vanilla ie installed, no plugins etc because firefox is my primary browser. until ie sorts out the horrid install process (restart you pc? please!) and then unexplained problems like these firefox will continue to grow. viva la revolution.

i too have a problem with the dep but in my case i go to open the program internet explorer and almost instantly the dep pops up saying that it needs to close so i tell the dep to let IE run but IE still go not responding and closes itself. another problem is that i tried to open firfox not to long afterwards and it wouldn’t open but i could press ctrl+tab to see the firefox emblem but could not navigate to it, i found a way to open IE but it was in no add on mode and i could navigate web sites and what not i then checked event viewer but no firefox error occurred i am befuddled as to the nature of this problem i pray someone can find the solution to our problem

piclens is only for fire fox isn’t it so why would it cause IE to go out too and how do we know if we have it?

I had Internet Explorer 7 and I upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 to avoid this problem, but I still get this “Data Execution Prevention has closed Internet Explorer”. It’s funny it seems to be one incompatibility between Windows and IE?!!!

    @adam -
same here. vista, sp2, upgraded IE7, now I can’t even use it. it will close as soon as I start the program.
I am writing this in firefox. I also have the google browser installed but it is too simple. I don’t have piclens. I don’t know what it is.

There is one temporal solution but after a while the problem appears again.
    (1)Start\ControlPanel\SystemAndmaintenance\performanceInformationAndTools\AdjustVisualEffect
(2)Select the Data execution prevention tab
(3)Check the Enable DEP for Esential windows programs and service [one time more if you ready have it]
    (4)Apply and Restart.

Sounds like more of the same crazy microsoft dudes with programming issues. I don’t think it is Google, It’s probably IE. Try Firefox or Safari. Those both work well.

I picked up a virus. It disabled firefox.
I upgraded IE8 with the newest patch. Now IE8 works, (other than google mail)but I can’t get Firefoxworking at all. Uninstalled it etc. These things made more complicated by the internet control options in vista, add-ons and who knows what. Why so complicated?!

Right click IE and Run IE8 “as Administrator”. Then go to Tools.. Manage Addons.. and disable all addons. Then try to run IE8. Close IE and run it “regular”. Problem should be gone. You can later go back and see which addon was causing the problem.. if you care.

    Hello,
Just to let people know that i got this problem from a fake crack (virus).
XP sp3 ie8 would not open and the DEP would show up.

    Hope it helps

@All people having this problem: Try not to open an second tab or window. The Data Execution Prevention only pops-up when I open a new tab or window. Sometimes it even pops-up and says “Internet Explorer is closed” when I’m already closing it (FAIL).

hello everybody. I am a systems engineer. Well, i don’t know if the problem resides in IE8 internal code or google toolbar for internet explorer. But what i did, is upgrading from IE7 to IE8 and everything worked fine. I installed google toolbar and then, IE8 closes when i try to open it. I have vista OS and kept telling me about DEP window(Data execution prevention). The solution is to go to control panel, remove google toolbar and start IE7. It will work fine.

Here’s a trick — You can open a new tab without dismissing the dialogue box. That let me use the browser and also get into tools, internet options and disable add-ins.

Installed IE8 home & work yeesterday. Work no problems (w/ Google toolbar). Home, I get this message EVERY time I close ANY tab or close the application. Harmless but annoying. Will try disabling piclens. Didnt install Google bar at home and besides it is working at work.

No, it was absolutely the piclens. All I did (when home at lunch) was to disable that addin and the bogus warnings etc completely disappeared. Thanks, “Philip”!!
I do suspect that addins in general should be examined if this happens to anyone. For me, it was the piclens.

Right-click IE icon, select “Browse Without Add-Ons”. This will let you run IE. Go to Tools->Internet Options->Programs->Manage Add-Ons and start disabling add-ons suspected of causing your problem. In my case, it was the “NOW!Imaging” add-on from Slipstream (a dialup accelerator).

I had the same problem – IE8 closing with the DEP message. Like others, I went through disabling addons until it stopped happpening. It turned out to be the addons for Adobe Reader 9. Should have realised – the program had been installed the previous day.

I suddenly started getting the same message today, but IE would close and browsing became inpossible..
My son (neardier than me) and I read the comments, and we decided to “reset” all the add-ons on IE and that fixed it. Seems like many “freebies”, from aol, google, adobe or whatever get added to the IE addons and all of the sudden DEP kicks in.

Elie Wazen is right all. Disable the google toolbar and all its BHO’s or uninstall it. Then everything works just fine. I just did that very thing and IE8 is running just fine.

I just ran into a problem when opening IE8 that it would try to open twice. The first opening is trying to open my homepage, the second page is blank. Clicking on any command in the IE8 window would just give me an annoying beep. I had to use task manager to terminate IE8. I ended up going to the control panel and opening Internet
Explorer options, then go to the advanced tab and click on reset. This disables all of the add ons. I then started turning the add ons on one at a time and sure enough it is the google add ons. Oh, well, I can do without the goodle add ons. Everything else on IE 8 works fine. (at least as far as IE 8 and Vista goes).

Has anyone played Microsoft Windows 7 or is everyone waiting for the first SP?

  49. September 29th, 2009 at 16:23 | #49

    @PapaJack
The Java Virtual Machine was my issue after upgrading to IE8. I uninstalled the JVM and reinstalled the latest version and everything seems to work now. BTW, COMBOFIX trashed my machine and i was barely abl to recover it using sytem restore.
