Vista Security Flaws Discovered

December 26th, 2006 Kirb No comments

Yikes. Already several security flaws have been discovered in Windows Vista by security firms, and one of the security flaws affects Internet Explorer 7.0. This isn’t good news for Microsoft, since they haven’t even released Windows Vista to the general public yet. In my opinion, a lot will hinge on how quickly Microsoft responds to the reported flaws and patches them, although I can’t help but think how this will effect the huge Vista launch in January.

(Microsoft has already posted one post.)

Activate Windows XP after Upgrading Memory?

December 22nd, 2006 Kirb No comments

I added a gig of memory to my computer box and guess what? Upon booting my computer I was presented with a message informing me that since Windows XP was first activated on this computer the hardware has changed and it now needs to be reactivated. What!!?? I have added, changed, swapped, removed memory many times from computers and never got that message. Dunno what happened. And I couldn’t even activate it using the internet, I had to call in to the Microsoft Product Activation center, where I was gravely informed that everytime you make a hardware change you have to reactivate Windows. I know for a fact that is not true, unless Microsoft recently changed it. (I’m not always pro-microsoft. ;) ) The nice fellow from India reactivated Windows for me, and even wished me a Merry Christmas!! Thank you, and a very Merry Christmas to you and everyone else!!

Check your other email from Gmail

December 21st, 2006 Kirb No comments

A few days ago Gmail launched a new feature that allows you to check up to five other email accounts. The problem is they have only enabled this for a limited number of users, and I am not one of the lucky ones. :(

On a side note, I use Gmail almost exclusively now.

Use Remote Desktop to Connect to the Console

December 20th, 2006 Kirb No comments

Wow. This has made my life easier. To connect to the Console session on your Windows 2003 Server, just go to a command line and type,

mstsc /console

Ahh.. sweet. Now I don’t have to open the vault all the time to get to the server. :D

One of my Gmail accounts has a report bug link in the top right corner. My main account doesn’t. That’s kinda funny.

Pro Microsoft Blog

December 8th, 2006 Kirb 10 comments

Heheh.. Seth Stoltzfus accuses this blog of being a pro Microsoft blog. (notice the blogroll on his site) I’m not sure what gave him that idea, but the more I think about it, the more I agree. ;) I’ll give you some reasons why I am pro Microsoft.

Windows XP SP 2, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Windows Live Onecare, Windows Defender, Virtual PC, Windows Vista, Windows Media Player, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Writer, Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange Server, Windows Mobile, Internet Explorer 7, Visual Studio, Windows XP Tablet Edition, Windows Media Center 2005, Windows Desktop Search, Encarta, Streets and Trips, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Works, etc. etc. etc.

Just imagine if none of those products existed. Yes. I am pro Microsoft. (and also a Microsoft Pro) ;)

Ham and Spam

December 8th, 2006 Kirb No comments

E-mail spam, blog spam, forum spam…. aaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh.. would you spammers just bug off? No. I am not clicking on your links, so why waste your time spamming? I’ve been suspicious for a while now that spam is on the rise, and I just discovered this blog spam stats page by Akismet that confirms it. 93% of all comments are spam!! yikes.

Spam today: 2,729,513
Ham* today: 124,140
93% of all comments are spam

*Ham is what Akismet calls a non-spam message.

Got Google Checkout Stress??

December 4th, 2006 Kirb 1 comment

Average Jane writes:

So I had a horrible day – and it was all because of Google Checkout.

dapwords.wordpress.com writes:

People who try the Google Checkout while shopping at a variety of stores such as Buy.com or Toysrus.com, are rewarded with either a $10 or $30 savings. It appears to be working as new people are giving the service a shot: me included. What a disaster. Now google Google checkout and prepare yourself for the list of complaints. Transactions are slow. Orders are inexplicably cancelled. People are double charged. Furthermore Google offers no live customer service and all questions are fielded through email which they rarely if ever answer.

Jose Martinez says:

I will not be using Buy.com or Google Checkout ever again.

Gaussj says:

So, it seems like google checkout is just taking cash out from your credit cards, lending that money on hig APY to banks and making profit and it seems to consumers that they are doing something nice.
Bottomline is to stop using Google checkout.

Allan says:

What should I do? No response from the seller or from GCO. My $320 is missing and I need to receive this item ASAP. Should I cancel this order and buy from another seller (not GCO-based)?

 Mary says:

Google checkout messed up my order with Toys R Us and Toys R Us says to contact Google and Google says they’ll contact Toys R Us but that I should contact them too. Toys R Us doesn’t show receiving any response from Google. I am canceling my account with Google and denying the charges!

Dear Google,
We don’t want some automated email response after 2 days. We want real customer service. A real phone number that has a real live person on the other end. Thank-you.
